Book reviews "The Granny" by Brendan O'Carroll

Brendan O'Carroll is man with multifaceted qualities. He is a writer, actor, producer and director. He is Irish and is presently 48 years old. He was born in 1955 at Dublin. O’Carroll hails from Ireland and is best known on the world stage as the Irish matriarch Agnes Brown in Mrs. Brown's Boys. Brendon had 10 siblings and his mother who was a labor MP greatly influenced him. O Carroll is a self made man. He never completed his schooling and struck out on his own. He got his big break in 1993, when he was introduced into The Late Night Show. O'Carroll is also a gifted writer. Seven novels have been published by O’Carroll. Some of his novels have become popular and have been translated into at least 12 languages. His debut novel was “The Mammy” which was published in 1994. The book received favourable reviews and the world realized that there was more to O’Carroll than just acting the role of a comedienne in films and on stage. His latest book “The Granny” is in reality the third in the series of Agnes Brown tales which commenced with”The Mammy”. Brendon O’ Carroll uses his vast repertoire of comedy and roles to good effect to write this delightful book. The heroine is Agnes Browne, buxom and sweet. Though she is 48 she has a lover. In addition she also has 6 children in their twenties. One of the six is in jail serving a sentence. She loves her family and so does her lover, who loves her. Agnes also has a grandchild and that is how the book got its title. Her lover is from France and has the French touch. He is keen that Agnes Browne show cases her sexuality and the lady is on the horns of a dilemma. The family are full of love but short on cash and finance. They take a fateful decision to spread out and earn money. The writer has other ideas and there is a tragedy. This is a pivotal moment in the novel as this brings the entire brood home. Agnes welcomes them back and all realize that what joins them is love. The family live happily ever after. The ending is more like a fairy tale and all credit to O’Carroll for having written a lovely book, which is a best seller. Brendon O Carroll writes a simple tale, but the beauty is in its delineation which is superb. Here is a book that will enthral readers both young and old. It has elements of humour and a lovely story line, very well presented. O’ Carroll proves that he wields the pen equally well as he acts on stage. O’Connor’s is a BAFTA award winner. His life is equally colourful as he married his long time sweetheart in 1977. The couple had four children. The marriage floundered and the couple separated in 1997 and later divorced in 1999. O’Carroll married again in 2005. She is the actress Jennifer Gibney who has acted in many serials.

Narendra Modi and the BJP have let down the Armed Forces

Narendra Modi started his election campaign by addressing ex ex-servicemen rally from Rewari in Haryana in 2014( beginning). He announced to gathering that once he and the BJP is voted to power, he will make sure that OROP will be sanctioned for the officers and men of the Indian armed forces. What is OROP? It means One Rank One Pension and is a long-standing demand of the services. It also means that all soldiers will draw the same pension at any given point. This was essential as soldiers who have retired 2 or 3 decades back are drawing just about 30-40% of the pension drawn by a newly retired serviceman. Narendra Modi and the Bharatiya Janta Party made a big show of this and also included sanction of OROP in their election manifesto. It appeared that after 3 decades of the demand having surfaced, the ex-soldiers would at last get their due. But alas it has not happened! The BJP having won the election thought it fit to forget about the election promise. Narendra Modi is a past master at manipulation and he announced the sanction of OROP was 'dear' to his heart and he would not rest till it was sanctioned. yet, the same Modi failed to instruct his Finance and Defence Minister to go ahead to issue the government letter for OROP. Both the Finance Minister ( Jaitley) and the Defence Minister ( Parrikar) have in interviews said that OROP is 'complicated' and there is 'lack of clarity' on it and as such there is a need to refer it to a tribunal. This shows the thinking of the BJP top brass which is conditioned by age-old practices in vogue from the time of Nehru to keep the armed forces down and not give them their due. The downgradation of the armed forces commenced from the time of Nehru and Narendra Modi is following exactly that policy. The fact is that the political leadership has not realized that adage that a nation's respect is dependent on its military power and by such petty acts as not granting OROP, they are seriously undermining the morale of the armed forces. Does the political leadership realize that the ONLY unifying force in the country is the Army? Just withdraw the army from Kashmir or the North East and see what happens. There will be wide spread secession from the union. The BJP is indulging in self-defeating policies and one must accept that Jaitley who all along was just a agitationist has really no concept of world power. The BJP and Modi are playing with fire by not giving the soldier his due. The bell tolls for a nation that is ungrateful to its soldiers both retired and serving and I am sure Modi will hear it before he is out of office.

The Audicious attack on Japan: The Doolittle Raid on Tokyo

The Second World War saw the rise of the aircraft carrier. After the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on 3 December 1941 the entire American nation was in a state of anguish. President Roosevelt wanted a bombing raid to be carried out on Japan. This was easier said than done as the US Army Air Force had no aircraft to launch an attack on Japan or a base near enough to mount a bombing mission. The Plan of Francis Low Credit must go to one man named Francis Low, a submariner who put forward a theory to his superior officer to mount a raid on Japan by taking an aircraft carrier close to the Japanese coast. The proposal through proper channel reached Admiral King who Okayed the proposal. The US admiralty was convinced that this was the only way to strike at Japan immediately. President Roosevelt was also informed. The newly launched aircraft carrier the USS Hornet was zeroed on for this task. This was a 26000 ton aircraft carrier and had been launched in November 1941 a month before the Imperial Navy’s attack on Pearl Harbor.
Charles Doolittle and the USS Hornet After speedy trials the aircraft carrier sailed through the Panama Canal in early 1941 and entered the Pacific Ocean. The plan envisaged launching the B-25 bomber from the deck of the USS hornet when it had steamed to about 400 NM of the Japanese coast. The aircraft were expected to bomb Japan and continue to China for sanctuary as the Bombers could not land back on the flight deck of the Hornet. It was an audacious plan and required dare devilry of a high order. The man chosen to head this mission was Lt Colonel James Doolittle, who later rose to the rank of general US Army Air Force. On 20 March the USS Hornet with its complement of B-25 bombers sailed for enemy seas. It was escorted by the carrier USS enterprise. It neared the enemy sea by 17 April, when it was 550 NM from the Japanese cost. The weather was appalling and worse a Japanese fishing boat sighted the Hornet. It immediately radioed information to the imperial naval headquarters in Tokyo. After the war it was learnt that the message was received in garbled form and nothing much could be made about it. Bombing Mission This information was not known to the US task force and an immediate decision was taken to launch the strike. With weather also worsening, the decision to strike Japan was voted up.The aircrew were assembled one hour before the mission and briefed about the raid. Many of the aircrew came to know about their mission only at that time. It is on record that not one stepped back from the mission. On 18 April 1942, 16 B-25 took off from the USS Hornet after short intervals to bomb Tokyo. They flew in single file and headed for the Japanese Coast. The Japanese were surprised and there was only sporadic Anti aircraft fire. Not a single of the B-25 were hit and all dropped their payload bombs on military targets in Tokyo and other places, but the damage was minimal as the bombers were carrying a limited number of 500Lb bombs.
Landing in China The 16 bombers as per plan continued to China, but bad weather forced almost all of them to crash land on the China coast. The planes were total wrecks. but all crew members escaped. One plane made it to Vladivostok in Russia and the crew and plane were interred there. They were released towards the end of the war. Four of the crew were captured and killed by the Japanese, but the others escaped to safer areas with the help of partisan Chinese fighters. Unfortunately the Chinese paid a heavy price for helping the crew of the B-25 and almost 250 of them were executed as the Japanese searched for them. Doolittle also escaped and returned back to the USA.

Assessing Hitler as a Military commander

Adolf Hitler must be one of the most reviled characters of the twentieth century. Firstly he unleashed a war and secondly he unleashed a spate of crimes against humanity during the occupation of Europe. However the second world war is a fact of History and Hitler was the Chief of the German war machine. There is also little doubt that no decision could be executed in Germany without his express approval. After the war was lost a number of German generals blamed him for the defeat. By corollary it must be appreciated that early victories and the prolongation of the war was also due in part to Hitler. Hence after a lapse of some 60 years we can have a dispassionate look at Hitler as a Commander and head of the German Army The Fall of France and Retreat of The BEF The Germans were always terrified of a two front war. To obviate this Hitler signed a non aggression pact with Russia and then invaded France. The battle is important as the Wehrmacht over ran France in just a little more than a month The British expeditionary force had to retreat fro Dunkirk and Hitler became master of Europe. The plan for the invasion of France must have had the express approval of Hitler and must have been discussed threadbare in his head quarters. Hence some credit for this campaign must go to Hitler. In addition the bold and daring plan for the invasion of Norway in the teeth of the superiority of the Royal navy was entirely Hitler’s plan. The landings at 5 places on the coat led to the capitulation of Norway. The Russian campaign Hitler abrogated the Russo German treaty of friendship and invaded Russia. Hitler was a man of no moral principles, but his lightening thrust into Russia when 3 German armies conquered thousands of miles of Russia is nothing short of startling. The plan for the invasion of Russia was conceived by him in his command post and along with the German staff some credit must go to Hitler. After the defeat at Stalingrad the stiffening of German resistance was entirely due to the iron will of Hitler. Assessing Hitler’s Military Ability Hitler had some ability as a planner and executer of a campaign. An example is the Ardennes offensive of late 1944. Hitler also had a sharp though convoluted mind. But he had as per reports studied the writings and theories of the great masters of warfare like Fredrick, Clausewitz,Moltke and Schlieffen. Hitler was certainly not a great commander in the class of Napoleon or Alexander. But to entirely dismiss as a cipher in terms of military knowledge would not be entirely correct. The Rescue of Mussolini by Major Skorzany: A Dare Devil Operation

What is bravery? It is an act of attempting to do the impossible. One such episode has caught my imagination. The man who carried out this act was a German Para Major named Skorzany. He was specially selected by Hitler for this act. A man of infinite courage and a dare devil, he was asked by Hitler to rescue Mussolini the Italian dictator from a mountain ski resort in Central Italy. The Italians who made Mussolini retire were aware that an attempt would be made to rescue Il Duce and so were shifting his residence every 2 months. However German Intelligence was able to pinpoint that Mussolini was held at the ski resort in Central Italy. Major Skorzany assured Hitler; he would rescue Mussolini and get him back to lead the Axis powers. In real terms Hitler was well aware that the Italians were just waiting to make peace with the Allies and would also hand over his best friend to them. Thus in September 1943 Skorzany made a daring plan to free Mussolini. It must be noted that the ski resort was only accessible by cable car and there was no road. So a decision was taken to land Gliders on the resort. The Major himself led the assault as the Gliders were airborne. It was a risky operation to land a glider on the small ground of the resort, but the German Para troopers did just that. Only one paratrooper lost his life in the landing. A master stroke was to take a senior Italian police official who on emerging from the glider shouted in Italian 'don't fire... don't fire '.This sowed confusion in the hearts of the guards who were quickly over powered and Mussolini was freed without firing a shot. Mussolini and his girl friend Clara were then whisked away by a small German light plane to Germany. It was feat without parallel in terms of audacity and bravery. Somehow this feat is not given much importance and Hollywood which has been making all sorts of war movies has conspicuously ignored this romantic saga of bravery. Maybe, because they would not like to propagate an episode of bravery from the Nazi era. But then Hollywood has never been known to be objective. The Major was involved in a few other attempts of dare delivery. One of these was his assignment to assassinate the 3 leaders Stalin, Churchill and Roosevelt at Yalta. But the task was to gigantic and he gave up the plan, after it was compromised. What about the famed Major? He was arrested after the war, but escaped to Spain, where General Franco gave him refuge. He died in 1975.

Rukmani Varma the Princess who Paints Erotic figures

Background India is an ancient civilization that has been in existence from 5000 BC. During this vast span India has produced works of great art, some of which is erotic. This is so for the simple reason that eroticism is an essential part of Hindu thought. Modern Painting India has been home to great painters. One of the greatest painters was Raja Ravi Varna who is considered as the Father of Modern Indian Art. His granddaughter Rukmini Varma who was born in 1940 has carried on the legacy of art of the house of Travancore. Rukmini ‘s title is Her Highness Bharani Tirunal Rukmini Bayi Tampuran, Fourth Princess of Travancore. She hails from a dynasty that traces its lineage back to 1200 years. Childhood: Rukmini Varma Her early life was like an idyllic fairy tale. She grew up in Satelmond Palace in Trivandrum. Right from her young age art came naturally to Rukmini. She grew up as a royal princess and was given her first set of brushes and paint when she was only 6. She started painting at a young age and soon was studying and reading about the great masters of art like Rembrandt, Rubens, and Caravaggio. She also master the ancient Indian dance forms like Bharatanatyam, Mohiniattam and Kathak After 1947 After 1947 there was a churning in India as the British Empire ceased to exist. Rukmini’s parents also put her in Public schools and private tutors in the palace were dispensed with. In 1949, the State of Travancore vanished from the map forever when it was merged with Independent India, and the royal family retired from active public life. They sold the Satelmond palace and retired to Bangalore. For the next 2 decades Rukmini did not paint much as she came to terms with a new life where there were no liveried servants, royal guards, and the ritualistic ceremonies of the palace Return to Painting Rukmini returned to painting for the simple reason that she loved to paint. She painted with vigor and by 1970 she had completed her first series of oil paintings, which were exhibited in Bangalore to positive reviews. Her second exhibition in 1973 saw 34 of the 39 paintings displayed being sold in a matter of days. International Exposure In 1976, upon invitation, Rukmini embarked on her first major international exhibition at India House in London, which was opened by Lord Mountbatten, the last Viceroy of India. He was impressed with her and asked she would paint a portrait of him in traditional Indian attire, wearing a turban and an achkan. She was also invited for fox hunting and picnicking with him on his country estate. However with his tragic death the promised portrait was not painted. Further success Subsequent exhibitions followed in Bonn, Cologne, and Neuenahr in Germany, along with invitations fromParis, Zurich, Madrid, and Rome. Queries for her work began to come in from collectors in Europe, America, Singapore, and the Middle East. In 1981 she had another highly successful exhibition in Bombay at theJehangir Art Gallery and at The Taj Art Gallery  Her paintings of “flesh and gems” which had voluptuous nudes in mythological settings were a hit. She believed in celebration of the human, particularly female body.. Eroticism Rukmini blazed a trail in India by painting characters from Hindu Mythology in the nude. No less a man than Swami Chinmayananda advised her not to paint Hindu Mythological characters in the nude, but she distanced herself from the advice. This was the most productive phase of her career as she painted nudes from Mythology. She wrote : ‘I got fed up with all these restrictions. You couldn’t express yourself in the way you wanted. I am certain even Ravi Varma wanted to paint flesh as flesh is, without restrictions…’ Rukmini painted nudes from her ‘Pratiksha’ series was quietly sold into private collections in India and abroad, and was not exhibited anywhere so as not to provoke orthodoxy. Divorce and Further art In 1988 her youngest son died in a road accident. This had a devastating effect on her and for many years she refused to paint. In the mid-90s Rukmini picked up the brush to paint. Though she painted yet she remained almost a recluse and has refused to exhibit any paintings.. Last word For the last 18 years Rukmini is living at Bangalore. She spends her time paining and at 73 remains a beautiful woman. There was a time when even Raj Kapoor wanted her for film roles, but she declined. Her paintings have blazed a new trail and many are exhibited abroad and in India.

The Red Balloon: Friday Poem

Let go , serendipitous, to rise, bob and float on supple breezes.
Your snaking string strolls out of reach.
Detached forms here, where once coexisted ground and buoyancy, an anchored ship.
I jump once, twice in my powder blue sneakers, feet strapped in for landing, rubber of soul.
Soles, the striped or floral cushions under which we find straggling minted coins, crinkled transparent candy wrappers and rough/smooth terrain.
Gravity wrestles with my momentum.
His bony fingers curl around my grazed ankles amidst the heady scent of cherry blossoms, those lacy bursts.
I imagine you will be dashed in hail and rain, the malaise of storms, helpless in your vertical lift.
Past is your reflection in my eyes, the colour of your red coat, a pretty envelope for air, a plain chord of a wrist bracelet.
Your expanded form, so light, here with me, at the horizon's edge.
Reduce, shrink you are a single crimson dot.
Calms of cerulean skies open to you.

Deceptive is this singular perception of dot and calm,
even as you coast and dip, unfettered, light- catcher in a satin skin.
You are a dark blood red reflection spreading in the eye of the approaching hawk.
The arcing graceful swoop, rudder in wings, natural flight, suggests an avoidance of the floating anomaly in her aerial zone.
The new red balloon continues the ascension nonplussed.

Inflated balloon, the sky is no limit

Food for Thought: What's in Your Pockets?

Impatience

I was having a conversation with hubby about healthy snacks, the art of the grilled cheese and pre-meal hunger chasers and this gave me the idea for  a little experiment. I had a few pita pockets handy, a scantily packed fridge and cupboard that contained a few resources. I was nowhere near the grocery store but there was plenty to see.  Time to get inventive without throwing good taste into the storm cellar as dinner hour was fast approaching.  Lions,  and Tigers and Bears Oh my. ;) (Wizard of Oz)

As hubby headed up to the loft to listen to a few tunes, I dawned my hat  and headed out into the spectacular outdoors for a little tete to tete with Bar B Q.   She's a doll when it comes to  outdoor cooking and flavorful coal fired grilling. You can  also add mesquite seasoned wood chips  to the coals  for an added smoky mesquite flavor. Warning: Please do not gnaw on the chips, as you would a stick of  raw sugar cane,  stick to what is on the grill.. :)Just say'n as the scent of mesquite can be alluringly distracting to the hungry. Incidentally,  I have tried sugar cane,  raw, delicious!

Alfred North Whitehead (1861-1947)
"Seek simplicity, and distrust it."

Luckily the wind came up dispelling  the hoard of  little black flies away from  my netted ear canals,  eyes and  mouth even as I hummed a few bars from "The Little Black Fly Song" in hopes of respite from the swarm.  Facial orifices  are an attraction for them much to my chagrin. With the bugs now at bay,  I lit the BBQ for dinner preparations and a little culinary adventure. Bedecked in my bear bells, I thought it might be easy to add the pitas to the grill with a small cube of cheese of choice stuffed in the pocket,  while I cooked the chicken.  The air was weighted with a silence  interspersed with a concert of bird song. Those melodies. so varied,  exist as a form of identification and communication of   birds, the vertebrata,    classification. They are the ornithologists delight and the originators of tunes long before we humans knew how to strum a guitar, or gauge our vocal chords for the purpose of producing scales and notes for perfect pitch.

Chicken with garlic, and Montreal Chicken Spice+ Grilled Cheese Pita

Ode de BBQ was an enticing cologne in this sequestered habitat as I adjusted the flame listening less for the sizzle of chicken than the wash of ripples and gentle whisper of currents in the stream just off  my right shoulder.

Once I had grilled the non-meat pitas and achieved  a slight "pinking"  of  the chicken,  it was time to move indoors.  Quick twist:  With the wrist and hand close the valve on the propane tank and flick the dials to off. It is a most interesting turn of events and saves you from empty tanks  as the propane dissipates out of the open top BBQ into the air... or worse, imagine and do the quick twist.

What's in Your Pocket: Monster Mouth,  Frills and  Hail Caesar

I have always found pockets and book shelves to be the most intriguing source for understanding any given human.  In my own pockets I have discovered that memory stick that I forgot about. I have also found coins and bills, to my delight,  as this feels deceptively like free money but is  the change from your last purchase.  Pockets are also references for groups of people, herds of animals or  smaller conglomerates, gathering  in a wider venue.  Today we will have a look at the pita pocket as all three are united into the  tasty pre- meal hunger chaser already mentioned. Pockets simply carry small handy items, can be filled or emptied, used  on your clothing or externally.  Case, envelope are close relatives or synonyms.

Historic: A library book had a pocket in the back for a card that was stamped for date due. We used to have  2 pockets  for  name cards  of  children who needed to go out of the  classroom  to the washroom. They went in pairs and did not need to wait to ask the teacher if they remained responsible in their choices. The teacher and students also knew where the child was in the event of an emergency.

The Pocket: What a simple and magnificent invention , when you think about. I am sure you know of many more uses for the pocket space.

Here are pockets with potential for carrying you into a food adventure. Enjoy. Fill er up. :)

Monster Pita Pocket
Ingredients
-12 mini Pita pockets ( whole wheat or white)  grilled on the BBQ with a square or two tbsps of grated of cheddar cheese.  Try other cheeses that go with the ingredients listed below. -Feel free-
-1/2 cup of  farm fresh corn (already out ahead of season, ahh the miracles of  innovation or smart farms beyond the use of  growth hormones)
-Medium size grilled chicken(breast, thigh or drumstick, remove skin). You can also use lean ground beef if that is easier or leave out the meat altogether for a vegetarian treat.
-Sauce Choices :  Hot Sauce  Salsa, Chili, Chutney or Mango Pickle (India)
Salsa: Use 1 tbsp per pita and I recommend  the other sauces, for chicken,  in quantities to taste. The hot sauce can be added to any one of the others or used alone.

Directions
-Place small cubes of grilled chicken in the grilled pita with cheese.
-Add sauce of choice.
-Finally add steamed corn ( 12-15 min. in boiling water) cut the cooked kernels off the cob with a sharp knife close to the cob or use canned corn ( warmed)  if you must.

Serves 4

Pretty in Green Frills
This pocket is the same as above.  The exception is that you are stuffing it with a chicken Caesar salad and you do not have to grill the pocket. If you make your own Caesar dressing, this is  even better and the grilled chicken is the same as above. Try not to rip the pitas when stuffing.  You many want to make the frill (romaine lettuce pieces) tiny if you do not like the flamboyancy of the greenery hanging out of the opening. Enjoy according to pocket style choices.

Caesar Dressing
Ingredients
1/4 cup vegetable oil
2 tbsp grated Parmesan cheese
1 tbsp white wine vinegar
2 tsp Dijon mustard
2 cloves garlic, minced
1/2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
3 tbsp mayonnaise

Mix all the ingredients together and let rest overnight or for a few hours so the flavors will meld.  Keep refrigerated until use.Donated to me  from a friend. "Yummy"  her and I agree. Enjoy.

 Hail Egg Caesar

Ingredients
-12 small pita pockets, bite size.
-3 boiled eggs, shells removed.
-Homemade Caesar dressing (above) , as opposed to mayo,  added to taste and to moisten the mashed egg mix
-Sprinkle of paprika
- Light splash of  freshly squeezed orange juice or grapefruit juice if you like  sour next to sweet of dressing. Careful not to flood the mixture. The fruit is a nice flavor addition to the creamy and it does not curdle from the acidic base unless you add too much.
- 1/4 cup of chopped green pepper or 1 celery stalk, tiny pieces.

Directions
-Mix together the egg and dressing.
-Add fresh orange juice, 12-14 drops, adjust to taste preferences and stir lightly.
-Add green peppers, tiny cubes, the size of the smallest lego blocks and stir lightly.
-Gently open the pitas, not grilled but you can heat them in the micro if you like it hot, and stuff them with the mix. Be careful to use a soft  touch so as not to rip the pockets.
-Sprinkle lightly with paprika for colour and added flavor.

Serves 4

To all of this I added some cherry tomatoes and rings of raw coloured peppers. Yummmmm
You can serve each of these recipes as one flavor on separate occasions  or mix and match depending on the number of guests, the time you have and availability of  ingredients. Find your fave and stick with it , have all three or add some of your own inventions. You can also adjust the size to serve as  large pita pockets and adjust all the quantities accordingly. This makes for a healthy, zesty  lunch. Yummmmmm.

What's in your pockets? Enjoy with family and friends.  :)

Vampires , Sex and Blood: Is it possible?

We have all read tales of Vampires. One of the characteristics of vampires is that their life force was rejuvenated if they drank the blood of young girls. Basically it was a form of sex. The male vampire had sex with a young healthy female and the mesmirsed her and dra k her blood. A very famous tale is of Count Dracula, a novel written by Bram Stoker.

Can such a weird thing be possible?   On the face, it looks absurd, but new scientific experiments do bring forth some startling facts. Older mice were given blood transfusion from youngrr mice and it was observed that older mice became healthier.  This nothing short of revolutionery. Could it be applied to humans ? Well its good to think if it, but not practical. In any case God is a great leveller and what he gives he takes something away. So just relax and look for a younger girl for sex. That IS a great rejuvenater.

P.H._D>

The dynamic quest to uncover, rediscover, avoid the need for undercover, discover are all the angles in A Story (proper noun) is  amiable, alluring and  elusive. The process for exposing any given anomaly  through fiction, imagined  imitations of aspects of reality,  or truth includes a range of details splayed across  value scales like the grays in a sketch. The Story is weighted heavily in a finer sense of pragmatism and intuition.  It is lifted floating in a wanderlust of dazzling heights, a vermillion feather on those supple wind currents of compassion and knowledge. At the end of it all, not the in apocalyptic sense,  but merely in the completion of this idea, a complicated balance,  inconvenient,  is found in the emerging conclusion. *The Hope*.

Some exposures and the creative fair consequences of these are easier to fathom then others especially when the villian or villians are obviously irretrievably that. An antagonist constructed in a flat one dimensional manner in the story line will show us this about life, as well.  To live beyond dimensions or across them is hard. Think of living beyond any given moment and into the next few > 100trillion, 2 billion, 300million 456 thousand times on a regular basis while circling the globe at light speed. WOW! Well, maybe not all that. ;)

<But>

Deeply entrenched roots, are not easily removed. The extrication is often damaging to the landscape- a hole- as erosion sets in, and other plants are damaged in the uprooting. Better if the tufts of grass, weeds, seeds, new trees, with less rooted systems, be plucked, planted, pruned, watered and maintained for everyone's enjoyment and good health.  Guided but not controlled in their growth by well appointed gardeners and natural means through wind and storms.

Simply said, preparation for the future across and beyond objects like crystal balls, obelisks, oracles and tarot cards is the essence of the present, the Y.O.L.O. of it all. Media, literature, the arts and film lend us a hand, offer a vision.

Beyond gardening tips and figurative language, we have arrived at the head stand moment in the yoga class of our discussion. The guest is now a cover, specifically and literally a book cover. Ohh I happen to have one here and I have permission to use it from the author. =Easy=

On this cover, if you choose to buy the book, there is a very interesting detail on the side of the mountain. The top most figure in the imagined evolution, in this truly well crafted, thought provoking and lol book,  and it is  a key to the next novel.   Covers, like this one,  often set the tone along with the title for the content  when carefully chosen. A Story always has a good cover.

I certainly needed my P.H._D to tell you this.   I am after all  Perfectly Human (yes, that means I have flaws) and  the  first initial  of my name   is identifying me and a minor contribution to the Alphabetical Assembly for shared use in the effort to craft communications of all kinds. :) I now afforded us the most sanguine moment for a little talk about education as a most compelling topic for our times.

On one end of the spectrum education, as an institution, has not yet made a student of the robot but possibly a master. If they attended a local University, what would be their double Major? Would they live in a dorm room with the human students or would they find a corner stand in the communal computer lounge? Robotics is definitely a rainbow for the enhancements it brings to our defenses and quality of life but there is always the threat of a storm, dare I say apocalypse, as many suggest. Just say'n. The Zombie(the viral on virus) of film, video, books  is getting a little heavy competition from the engineered real time plethora of robots. Seems like there is quite the line up for the destruction of humanity theories, past, now present and in the future.

Did you know we need never seek an education on how to play the violin, dance, write or even concern ourselves with the distinction of species as....there is a robot for that.  This phrase may replace the "there is an app for that" predecessor. We are circling the balance of educated artificial intelligence, the new frontier, in relation to human augmentation.  Reasonable progress with a 360 degree  understanding  and awareness of  ripples would be a rare gift for any human or human team.  What will be the future effects? ))))))

Trees Grow Mighty Roots

Scared, feeling apathetic or just plain ignoring it all. No, when we talk about education, enlightenment and foundations in learning, as they relate to later accomplishments we are finding the gold flakes in glass balls, the true riches. Learning always accompanies expansion in thought along with a deeper understanding of complex boundaries,  ideas but also  tolerance, compassion and culture. What is a mind without a heart, an intuition and  a finer sense of things.  The P.H.(Perfect Human)  level does not deny us this in the whirlpool of life. *The Fight*

In the end, yes, a kind of  apocalypse has occurred in the kidnapping of teen girls and the sordid corrupt and brutal  form their education has taken.  It is perfectly human to demand the right to an education and to preserve the institutions that offer global citizenship through learning. The cover on the face of things and the uncovering of the network of people responsible for this atrocity is a worthy goal. The highest edification in an educational institution comes from the PhD. *Respect*  The fact that this exists and is attainable, if we choose,  along with all the other graduated steps starting from around age 6 on  is a basic right. The freedom, for all people is partly this. Here is a  P.H._D (perfectly human demand ).   I was able to attain an education irregardless of my gender and I wish this for all.  This issue is completely and utterly of our times and once again the International community has begun the fight. Thank your for examining the Glitches along with me.

Contemporary Sparring Matches

The Folded Napkin (The early a.m. A thin coat of  ice had formed on the Lake after temps. dropped at night. This resulted in ice designs. )

Have you met Madi? Yesterday, she entered the house, not her's, or the one  where we catch a moment of repose and reflection among family or friends, beyond the sparring matches of our own lives. The rest on soft cushions intricate in their floral patterns and tonal compliments kind of places. No, Madi was going to  Parliament,  that other  house, with the flexible yet sturdy frame,   democratic seats that are  worn in places, padded in pink , brown, blue, green with a dash of purple, and strategically, lovingly  maintained for the comfort of  many.

She stepped up to the immense and polished door and knocked  to see if  anyone, the politicians, were at home. As she was admitted to this place of good governance, a giant in children's size shoes,  the conversation accompanied  her right over the threshold of debate, policy setting/ making and onto the big screen HD Tv of Kathleen Wynne and the Ontario Liberal  Minister of Health. The negotiations with Vertex for affordable pricing  of the drug Kalydeco, price tag $348, 000 a year for treatment, were taking time and she was simply asking could you hurry it up already. -Benefits to Madi's quality of life, priceless.

This 12 year old girl had a lot of pluck,  a polite manner, simple effective presentation skills, a nice outfit,   and a calm that would render some adults to shame. Her fortitude and poise was  a valuable lesson when  juxtaposed with  some of the behavior and antics seen in the Houses, ours, and others across the globe. I once witnessed  shoes being thrown across the room in a televised parliamentary debate in India. We are no better, here and we all have  stories and examples. The real story, Madi, is one you will want to know.
You can find more details and  well rounded coverage for  this issue of a  rare disease, the family's  fight, cost and balancing,  the network , the challenges on many levels  on CBC, Evening news or here Rare Diseases .

WELCOME back. Ok ,you did your homework.  Interesting wasn't it and important? OMG,  I am such a teacher. :) Let's take the discussion to the next level and centre around the idea of distribution. The pharmaceutical company, as you read, is developing and offering funding for the drugs necessary for Madi to live with  energy, strength and a measure of normalcy, that is close to perfect, given her fight. She is sparring with cystic fibrosis and winning, through the availability of this drug, but there is always the next round in the fight. Time is not on her side. As you read, the community, Dad's work insurance and the family are also in the ring, sparring with the cost of treatment. They do have help.  I think it would be easy to agree that all the Madis, Joshs, Samuels....______ (fill in the blanks, kind of thinking) deserve our best treatments and this is  irrevocably tied to a price tag, cash flow. Everything behind the production of Kalydeco, from distribution, research and yes profit margins, in a tight free market economy,  requires expense. Our value system  is, indisputably, worth a lot more than $348, 000 a year. Priceless jumps into my mind, yet again, as a simple pointed descriptive term.

As a society, a people we should demand quality of life for our children and tie this to pragmatic , creative solutions for funding. If we are to maintain a healthy, rich value system in conjunction with monetary considerations, we cannot say, "pay up or lose out"  to this family,  to Madi, to children. The systems, financial and ethical, are indisputably linked ,two kernels of our identity, within our times, our heritage and our society.

The ring for the sparring match needs to open up into spring meadows fenced in by those sustainable forests, on one side, and pot hole repaired roads, on the other.  In this resplendent field of battle exists Black- Eyed Susans, Daisies, some Purple Strife, kingly Rods of Gold,  grass varieties, the pollinators-the counter to terminators-:) rabbit and mouse holes, that will turn your ankle but are also homes in a meadow ecology.  Why do we meander here as allergy season approaches? Because nature teaches us, and writers love metaphors, analogies and hope readers do too for their   en light enment, in a busy day.

In a share economy  meadow  of   multifaceted and collective conscience, Madi need not go without. There is a great deal of wealth in the world. We need a fair and democratic idea for distribution in a free economy. Let's look at some of the new keys. 1. Crowd sourcing. 2. Sponsorship programs on many levels around the globe tied to cancer research, education for girls, and many of the big issues of our times.  3. Information: An in depth study into the start to finish process of making these life saving, life improving drugs. -The inside scoop is  ice cream, tiger tail. 4. Innovative, creative and practical business models from our leaders across cultures and all industry. We should not underestimate the brain power,  creative intelligence of business when  harnessed to good cooperate citizenship and sound, sensible investment.  Research can go beyond the medical labs.  We have begun to see this in the transition away from the cubicle philosophy to be replaced by larger centres and quiet work spaces for choice and movement depending on the job and to facilitate higher productivity or  smarter use of spaces for humans.

Madi has already entered the parliament buildings with confidence and calm and  addressed a slew of reporters. The media treated her with a respect that allowed her voice to be amplified, her feelings to be broadcast without the push and shove of the usual media scrum. I was in awe, refreshed  and thankful for this sign of respect, this measure of control, on their part.  As I sat sagging on my own cushy couch, I had the Notepad, with the metal spirals, at hand. The incessant  clicking of my pen made the music,  as I   feverishly  depressed the silver endpoint, down up, down up. The story was being told and we only needed to listen. She expressed a wish to feel well, to go on fighting, sparring with cystic fibrosis but with a meadow at her back not in the ring with boxing gloves, the clang of the bell, the fists and surging adrenalin. Her access to medicine would soon end as the cost could not be supported indefinitely. The essence of her message was poignantly felt, from my seat in my small home. This brave girl of 12 was speaking for  her right to quality of life, hers and others, in The House. What a simply beautiful, extra special, sampler of democracy.  The solution can't be far.

In fact just across the way, in another style  of sparring match, this one definitely in the ring,  there emerges a winner. Your arm is held high  and the announcement echoes out across the cyber space pulsing with excitement.  WE win, if I may be so bold as to use this plural first person pronoun. The restoration of a value system we hold dear.  One that says that equality is for all people, is championed here. The system was first  torn and then repaired through the aid of institutions: sports, courts, owners and more. I am referring to the ousting and fining of the owner of the L.A. Clippers basketball team over allegations of his less than sterling, tarnishing, in fact, racist comments.

I like to believe that there  is always an opportunity to restore the balance of things even further. Yes, I am probably a rugged optimist, at times. Soooo I have a few questions. Where does the money go? 21/2 million?  This is a drop in the basket, after a tip off the rim, for Mr. Sterling. While I have your attention, I would like to introduce the procurers of said amount  to a girl named, Madi Vanstone. Maybe, you would like to invite her to a basketball game? I am sure she loves sports? From what I have heard, just between you and me, the Clippers, The Raptors, the media,  the new franchise owners, the fans and whoever else is following this issue, she is quite a fighter, too. You would like her, as you have this connection in common, although your fights are uniquely yours.  A portion, small, could go as a sponsorship, the rest of the funds could go to other sponsorships related to your sport and also the fight against racism, in all its forms. I know this is just a solution that allows for more time for finding better solutions but more may come.

From meadows to rings the sparring matches are fought and won. The hope! Our upright value system, credited to us as the  only   bipedal +highly cognitive,+ feeling  species, could be the champion in this complex system of distribution and democracy.  Oh, there goes the bell, round 3 and Peace steps into the ring.  Yikes, quick change, let's go for coffee, this time round. I step out of the ring, for now, amidst shouts for blood, the curses and the rising  receptacle to be filled by the raw and torrid  promise of  mortal combat . There are all kinds of fights.

John Masters " Venus of Konpara" is a lovely Statement of Sexuality and Life in British India

John Masters was an Anglo Indian writer who brought the Raj alive in many of his books. A master story teller he would pick diverse themes and illustrate them by his stories. Venus of Konpara was his last book on India and the Raj and was published in 1960. In this book John recounts a masterful tale and brings out the clash between the old and the new. He also differentiates between Dravidian culture and the Aryans in his own inimitable way. But at the same time he advocates synthesis of cultures, both Dravidian and Aryan.
The story which is set at the turn of the nineteenth century when the Raj was in full sway is also a love story. The book does breathe sexuality and concerns the love of a Dravidian girl dancer with the Aryan prince of an imaginary kingdom. The Prince who comes after education from England wishes to build a dam and a cricket field in an underdeveloped part of his kingdom. When the work commences a beautiful statute of a woman dancer is discovered. The beauty of the statute gives it the name of Venus of Konpara. John Masters builds plots and sub-plots with the British resident, the uncle of the Prince and the tribal's of Gond. It is a thrilling tale and the Dravidian girl engrosses the prince as never before. Ultimately she marries him and that is Johns answer to a distinction between the Dravidian and Aryan races.
The book has its passages of sensuality as John describes the nude Indian Classical dance done by the girl dancer before the prince. But all in all it is an engrossing tale. John wrote many other books but 'Venus of Konpara' illustrates his love for India. John Master in this novel brings out the Aryan and Dravidian motifs. He also refers to tigers, forest fires, and poison arrows. The poison arrow kills the British resident in the book. The novel is set in South Central India of that time, where the Gond tribal's held sway. Perhaps John had visualized the setting in the modern state of Chhattisgarh. John Masters as a story teller is par excellence. His prose is simple and the style racy. In contrast to his other popular book Bhowani junction, Venus of Konpara is an equally significant work. We must salute this Anglo Indian writer who made India and the Raj come alive in his booksglo Indian writer who brought the Raj alive in many of his books. A master story teller he would pick diverse themes and illustrate them by his stories. Venus of Konpara was his last book on India and the Raj and was published in 1960.

Tourette Syndrome- The Intruder

Tourette Syndrome is a silent intruder disrupting a persons life until death. Imagine what happens
when your brain doesn’t work quite right and it is not regulating your body's movements, when we lose
control of our speech and involuntary sounds such as barking, screaming, grunts, and even words spew out.

Tourette Syndrome is the disorder- it is not a disease but a chemical imbalance in the brain. It is misdiagnosed and many people go
untreated through out their life usually deemed “weird, strange, or odd”.

Tourette ‘s is the second most common genetic disorder producing involuntary tics and
behavioral problems. Depression, sleep disorders, common compulsive behaviors,
and ADD -H- (attention deficit Disorder with Hyperactivity )are all under the “umbrella” as part of Tourette’s

There is no actual “test” to perform ,a neurologist familiar with Tourette ‘s will recognize some of the
symptoms. To recognize the disorder sometimes sudden changes in behavior, increased tics can occur with anxiety, emotional stress, tension and even excitement.

There are drugs that will help with treatment of a Tourette’s keep in mind this syndrome is
complex with a multitude of symptoms. So one kind of treatment may not work for another.

Usually Tourette’s shows it head in the early stages of a child's life around 5-6 years of age, nevertheless it has been diagnosed in the mid twenties such as the baseball player Jim Eisenreich.

Beware of Paul Ryan's Budget

Hours ago House Republicans pushed through a horrible and with hope ill-fated budget proposal called “ The Path to Prosperity” by Paul Ryan for 2015.
Ryan, is chairman of the House Budget Committee since 2011 and is a representative of Wisconsin's
 1st congressional district since 1999.
This budget will effect the lower and middle classes by replacing medicare, repealing the Affordable Health Care Act , and cutting medicaid, hurting millions of Americans- and raising taxes on the middle class. Millionaires will not be affected because of an $87,000 tax break!
This proposal will cut $5 trillion dollars and it will be coming from much needed programs such as:
Health care
Food Stamps
Education
Community programs
Theses cuts are aimed at the people who need these programs the most. Social Security and the military will not be touched.
Ryan's long range idea is to change and move retirees from Medicare and again try a subsidy based health care insurance plan .

Alterations

Alterations: Metarealism Explored in this digital image.

Entering the new place, a town in this case,  is like trying on the latest outfit that boasts an original style and a careful, creative combination of designs. The "garment" is hand stitched with a colorful repertoire of silken threads along the cuff and or over the heart for a decorative and poignant sense of town spirit. The quiet seams are tight in spots, loose, just there under the arms. Well spaced and close together in places and as needed. A town fashioned for people. Made to measure for a human fit. -The hope-  I spin and turn listening for the rustle and richness of the fabric of the town, feel for the textures that whisper against skin, instead of scratching or pricking. I notice the hang of the cloth on my frame, the one I give it, as I gain perspectives. This small person suited in her new attire checks the reflections, that selfie moment, and heads out into the people, places, ideas and things for penning. I call this activity writation (N)  Not to be confused with a certain mayor who has thought it just to attach his surname to  a broad and hearty word such as  nation. The result is a collapse, unbalanced semantic in the form of a compound, overly light + weighty word, usage.

This same fabric, seams and stitching we wear may be a quilt , a skirt , blouse, dress, consignment of leopard pants or jean shorts in the cultural architecture of a town. Styled and fitted by human frames.  This may consist of locals, out of province visitors, internationals... and out of towners like me. Who needs a label, when the outfit, the place,  is priceless, beyond brand names.

The identity is there to read like a complex novel , a Giller Prize winner or maybe a Sunshine Sketch for a few LOLs.  Will  I have the right balance of rock star and nerd to recognize the serendipitous  glitches from the negative one. Pparachute over the cliffs and or sidestep a crack or two. How about flipping an opposable thumb as opposed to the finger to the sky on those icy patches of direction and misdirection. :) Trans: Will  I remain open, true to myself and humble in all that I attempt. Try I must. Yes we are sliding into romanticism touched with idealism...Excuse me while I zip up my dress, button up my matching jacket. :)

We begin to scour the pamphlets, talk to a few locals, skim through the  internet and the hotel yellow pages,  for the best route for our quest. It is late afternoon and we had had no time to prepare outside of  a few bookings. I plunge into -Orenda- for awhile  in the hopes of some new thought for the plan of approach  because I am, now,  utterly bored with the inadequacy of our current paper and wifi search criteria.

D* Refresh: Thanks Joseph for your perspectives. Loving your work but the level of violence is hard, graphic but neither maudlin or trite in your hands, under your  creative watch. I think you mean to lend authenticity to the historical portrayal and possibly jar us into a sense of the whole toxic malaise that encompasses nations clashing. With violence on the rise, outside literary fiction, and growing anger in hotspots around the globe is desensitization creeping up or growing awareness and action coming to the fore.  I can't wait for the studies that might give us a clue.  The cutting embrace of sick lit. stunningly violent and digitally mastered HD visuals and videos aided by technology are now are playground. What are the long term effects of candid violence, and sex on those that have suffered and experience these as triggers. We also need to consider those that are fine with the whole thing and hope they will empathize enough to understand experiences beyond their own.   Are we only  about making it real? -no exceptions or intuitive wrappings?  No,  I think we are more when we enter these places and seek to show, learn grow. Hey, Joseph, thanks for this monologue as I am completely sure that you are talking with CBC hosts,  engaging in book chats with more learned and illustrious writers than I and or you are writing your next work. Maybe you are merging with the orenda through the essence of rebirth offered by spring. Happy Earth Day on April 22. :)  I am really enjoying your book and I have only just begun.  I also recommend "All the Broken Things, " by Kathryn Kutenbrouwer to readers and writers.  Should you, by slight chance, come across this blog while your mingling with the great literary minds of contemporary times,  can you get this book nominated for an award. Thanks. I am placing this message in  a blog bottle and sending it out into the sea of cyberspace. :) Hugs or Namaste,Mr. Boyce and readers of this blog.

D* As I closed the book, I realized that one of the best places to start the getting to know U road trip was the cultural centre and library that was across the street from the place we had dined last evening. Of course, I should have gone with that thought when it first entered the grey matter. Silly, really, counterproductive of me,  to always try to improve upon the first when sometimes that first is  right.- Hard to know sometimes- ;)

In a dimly lit corner next to the washroom in  a large book store, in another middle size town, I found a table of books,  The "Caption" over the table read "Read, Think, Learn".  Good thing I had to attend to a basic body function or I would never have found them. Hmmm They speak of a few alterations that are incredibly interesting in my humble opinion, but the violence is there, in some, and these books do turn some of our ideas on their heads. I would add "Question" (the Hows and Whys) as an alteration or addition to the main "Caption" and for your own thoughts and interactions here.  I saw a glass bookcase full of  fine titles , across from the girl's washroom in a Whitby high school. I wonder  if this placement  proximity to washrooms approach works at all.  I think the front of the store is still the prime space maybe this will change. Hmmmm.
