Coming back to Blogger

It's been four years since I left Blogger and moved to a WordPress site. I used to run a blogging empire from the driver's seat of my taxi, pulling out my MacBook Air to sign on and register a new domain between customers.

Had a taxidriving blog on Blogger. It's still there, if anybody wants to have a look at Car 58, where are you? where you may read the night thoughts of a night cabbie.

Well, I thought it was entertaining reading at the time. And so did my brother cabbies around the world - there's still one or two blogging happily away if you follow the links to Dublin and New York.

The photo shows Taxi 58, freshly repaired after some bingle or another. Probably a kangaroo on my shift.

I guess I'm back on Blogger, as a member of the Prestigious Writers' Group. I'll see if I can find something to write about that isn't taxidriving. Shouldn't be too hard, there's a world of fascinating things out there!

Is Facebook Making Us Less Social?

Facebook has hundreds of millions of members, but how often do the members actually socialize? I'm not talking about liking a friend's post or adding a comment here or there. I'm talking about going out together, having an in-depth conversation or doing pretty much anything outside of Facebook together.

For many, Facebook and other social networks have become a replacement for social interaction. It's easier to take to your computer, smartphone or tablet to connect with friends than spending any real time building true friendships. Take a good look at your friend list. How many of those people are you actually friends with? Do you really know much about them outside what they post?

I think the site's great for connecting with people from your past or keeping up with friends and family that live hours away. It shouldn't be something that drives a wedge between others. For instance, I've watched people in restaurants sitting together who believe they're socializing, but they never speak. They have their smartphones out, checking updates on Facebook and updating their own status. Their digital lives have overtaken their real life.

It's gotten so bad that people are actually being diagnosed with Facebook related depression and fatigue. I love connecting with new people, but I also enjoy cultivating relationships with the people around me as well. Honestly, I don't use Facebook as much as I used to. It's become a place for drama, bragging and the desperate need to have the biggest friend list.

If you find yourself feeling down after using the site, you might be dealing with Facebook misery. To me, it's just not worth it. Especially now that the site makes it difficult to see what you want and pushes ads on you left and right.

What do you think?

BBQ Bacon-Wrapped Chicken Strips

This is my recipe for BBQ bacon-wrapped chicken strips. These always seem to be a definite man-pleaser. I don't know many men who don't like bacon (or many people in general who don't), these aren't hard to make at all, but do cost a little more than the average meal at home. These are so worth it regardless of the cost, and they're great for parties!

Ingredients:
1 pack of bacon
2 chicken breasts
A half cup of BBQ

Directions:
Slice the chicken breasts into strips about 4 inches long and an inch wide on a cutting board and put them on a plate. Lightly fry the bacon strips on both sides for a few seconds in a frying pan, but only enough to lightly brown them without making them crispy; they still need to be able to bend. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees, wrap the pieces of chicken with the bacon strips after they've cooled down some and put a toothpick through the bacon and chicken just enough so that it won't unravel. Bake the bacon-wrapped chicken bites for about 40 minutes or until done. When done remove from the oven and spoon out enough BBQ to baste the chicken bites in a coating of BBQ. Enjoy!

These are the best for any kind of party and no one will be able to forget them!

I was interviewed once for a top staff writer's post for a publication in India

I thought I was the best writer in the world when I first began in the 1990s. I was a diploma holder in Journalism from Mumbai and was so eager to show the world at least to the Indians. I thought Indian writers were mediocre. They would write mostly with nouns and adverbs. Though my dad did not have much hope in my writing ambitions, I was sure I would one day be one of the New York Times best selling authors. You know such was the enthusiasm. I would visit editorial offices of publishing houses in India just to rub them in the wrong way. The American consulate library had spoiled me into believing that I could be the next prolific writer to hit the news. One day I received a call letter from the office of India's top selling movie magazine Stardust. They should report sharp. They were interested to use me on their team of staff writers. My Bubblews Posts for the Day

by solivagus

i'm giving you wood

Concerning the horrible dream I had prior to waking last night, and an open letter to the ex-boyfriends who were in it.  BOTH of them, for some reason.

Concerning how excited I was to get up and out of bed and go to Ren Fest, which as You can see from future postings... didn't go as planned.

Not much to this one, it's a review for a fun app.  If you have trouble finding things to use as images for your posts, and you don't want to use something from my blog, this is a good app.

Self explanatory but goes into examples of why you should and how I use them.

Customize It All
You ever wonder?  Well wonder no more, this comprehensive answer will encourage you to put the monster thoughts away.

When buyer's remorse settles in, what do you do to cope?

I started watching Bridezillas, and that was my first mistake...

This phrase represents the 'inaudible music which is celestial in origin'.  If that's not confusing enough.

And the best part is, I'm clothed.  At least that's what Spartanmom says LOL

She sang this amazing song about being a straight up hooker and I applaud her for that.  And I hope one day I can be that proud of being a hooker.

I hope you enjoy my articles, but more importantly, I hope you fricken read them and like them and comment on them, duh.

Solivagus,
Drew

Solivagus makes his YouTube Debut!

I've been a busy beaver!

Between starting about five blogs and a youtube channel, it seems like I haven't been doing anything but 'setting up' for a long time LOL.

But I know that everything I do is another step that will never need to be done again and I am enjoying being my own boss and still having the motivation to get everything done.

I have noticed a few of you shared my posts, that was awesome, and I mean from my personal blog!  Make sure you put up a post of your personal blog or get it on Eden's list so I can follow it, right now I'm following about four and I can stand to follow more, easily.

Here's a video introduction I made of myself on my new youtube channel:

Whattya think?  I'm gorgeously retarded at speaking, aren't I?  Sorry, I didn't mean retarded in a derogatory sense, I really mean don't I seem mentally challenged?

Lol, I think I was just shy and surprised that I was doing this!  But in order to be a success these days you have to be willing to put EVERYTHING out there.  And that's something I have no issue with as of late!

Drew De Jesus

Wrestling (sport)

Do you enjoy watching Wrestling? My son used to wrestler in middle school and it was fun going to the tournaments and watching all of these children come together and laughing and playing around with each other until they walk onto the mat.

We have discovered that wrestling is one of the few team sports that all teams are nice to each other before and after leaving the mat. I have never seen a fight after a wrestling match. The sportsmanship is amazing and the support that the team members give to each other and to the other teams and the coaches also.

This young man (red head gear) won 3rd place today at the tournament for our school. I am so proud of all of team that participated today.
I have to say I was not impressed with the surroundings at first due to
people's attitudes, however as the day went on it got better, all for the Mesa Coach who decides to just squat in front of me while I was taking pictures and did not even say excuse me or I am sorry or anything. It is our rival school and I am sure he did not even see me and that is understandable his player was on the mat and he wanted pictures.
I am into all sports at our school and I would say to parent's to support your child and their team and try to attend as many games as you can, it means so much to your child to look up into the stands and see a loved one and it makes them try even harder to win.

5 Worst Places in the World to Be a Woman

5 Worst Places in the World to Be a WomanMazar-e-Sharif, Afghanistan - May, 10 2008: Afghan women walking with their children at the Blue Mosque.
by Marleysa (pen name Anna Bayrakdar - previously published in 10thousandcouplesmagazine on May 2012)
According to the World Economic Forum, as much as 85% of countries have improved conditions for women over the past six years, but there is still a very long way to go for the following five worst places in the world to be a woman in. A recent global survey taken in many countries has short-listed countries such as Afghanistan, D R Congo, Pakistan, India, and Somalia as being the worst places to be a woman.
Afghanistan
Afghanistan, chosen as the worst place of all to be a woman, is a country of conflict and strife, and is poorly governed. The simple facts are that approximately 87% of Afghan women are illiterate since schooling for women is frowned upon in their culture. Add to that the fact that approximately 70% of Afghan women are forced into marriages at the young age of 13, yet another custom or cultural tradition, and you begin to understand why it's considered to be the worst place for women to be.
Another fact is that with very poor access to doctors, about one in 11 women has a very real chance of dying in childbirth.
Another contributing factor is the domestic abuse of women, which is seen as just part of women's daily life with hardly any protection, if at all, or help from police or any other governmental authority. Women in Afghanistan are seen as the "property" of their husbands and therefore have no economic rights. In recent years, a number of women have resorted to self-immolation (burning themselves with acids) as a way to escape from bad husbands or forced marriage arrangements.
Women that do try to speak out or take on public roles such as policewomen or news broadcasters are seen to be challenging ingrained gender roles. These women are often intimidated to stop or simply killed.
The Democratic Republic of the Congo
congo woman and childThe D R Congo, also widely known as the "rape capital of the world," is second in line as one of the worst places in the world for a woman to be born. This war-stricken country, where men use kidnapping and rape as a weapon of war, has ruined thousands of lives. The armed forces in the conflicts between North and South Kivu Provinces are constantly targeting women. In 2009 alone, more than 8000 women or girls were raped by these armed forces, according to the UN.
Women in this country are continually treated as second-class citizens with almost no opportunity to ever enter politics. Since the culture here is also to force very young girls into arranged marriages, until very recently, education for women was almost nonexistent. Through the campaigning of various factions, this seems to be slowly changing, and more girls are sent to school now.
Pakistan
pakistanThird on the list of worst places to be a woman, Pakistan has a huge problem of domestic violence against women. As many as 90% of women here experience domestic violence on a regular basis. But even worse than the domestic violence is the fact that more than a thousand women and girls are victims of so-called "honor" killings every year.
Another horrifying but all too common practice is that of burns from acid-throwing that women have to endure as "punishment" for spurning marriage proposals or unwanted sexual advances. Men take this spurning as an intolerable humiliation and often retaliate by throwing acid into a woman or girl's face. in order to horribly disfigure her as "punishment." But alas, a glimmer of hope for women has arisen with the forming of the non-governmental organization Acid Survivors Foundation (ASF). This organization, with the support of a UK charity Acid Survivors Trust International, helps with medical care and battles for justice. ASF is campaigning for new laws to restrict the trade of battery acid (often used in girls' faces) and to provide rehabilitation for the victims.
India
indian womenFourth on the list of worst places to be a woman, India is yet another country with a tradition of forcing young girls under the age of 18 into unwanted marriages. But even much worse than that is the horrific fact that as many as 50 million girls are "missing" just within this past century, due to female infanticide and foeticide. This clearly reflects the absolute low status accorded to women in India.
Sex-selective abortion cases have become a significant phenomenon in several parts of India. The reasons for killing baby girls are mainly economical. Girls need a dowry to be paid to a future husband, and in this poverty-stricken country, the cost of a dowry and an ignorance of family planning are the predominant reasons for these hideous crimes against baby girls.
Somalia
somalian women and childrenSomalia, the fifth worst place to be a woman, is a place where 95% of young girls face genital mutilation, usually between the ages of four and 11. Given the fact that there is a very poor health system, as few as 9% of women are ever able to give birth in a health facility, making the maternal mortality rate very high.
Here, as in many other places in Africa, women are often not allowed any education to speak of. Domestic violence is seen as just another part of daily life, and women live in constant fear of being kidnapped, raped, or killed. Add to that a total lack of proper health care or basic needs, and cultural inferiority as a reality for women, and one can fully understand why this country is considered to be one of the worst places in the world to be a woman.
To conclude, these are but a few of the horrors that women still have to endure in some countries and that we, as a caring world, need to look at seriously. Action needs to be taken to help emancipate more women around the world.
