Food for Thought: What's in Your Pockets?

Impatience

I was having a conversation with hubby about healthy snacks, the art of the grilled cheese and pre-meal hunger chasers and this gave me the idea for  a little experiment. I had a few pita pockets handy, a scantily packed fridge and cupboard that contained a few resources. I was nowhere near the grocery store but there was plenty to see.  Time to get inventive without throwing good taste into the storm cellar as dinner hour was fast approaching.  Lions,  and Tigers and Bears Oh my. ;) (Wizard of Oz)

As hubby headed up to the loft to listen to a few tunes, I dawned my hat  and headed out into the spectacular outdoors for a little tete to tete with Bar B Q.   She's a doll when it comes to  outdoor cooking and flavorful coal fired grilling. You can  also add mesquite seasoned wood chips  to the coals  for an added smoky mesquite flavor. Warning: Please do not gnaw on the chips, as you would a stick of  raw sugar cane,  stick to what is on the grill.. :)Just say'n as the scent of mesquite can be alluringly distracting to the hungry. Incidentally,  I have tried sugar cane,  raw, delicious!

Alfred North Whitehead (1861-1947)
"Seek simplicity, and distrust it."

Luckily the wind came up dispelling  the hoard of  little black flies away from  my netted ear canals,  eyes and  mouth even as I hummed a few bars from "The Little Black Fly Song" in hopes of respite from the swarm.  Facial orifices  are an attraction for them much to my chagrin. With the bugs now at bay,  I lit the BBQ for dinner preparations and a little culinary adventure. Bedecked in my bear bells, I thought it might be easy to add the pitas to the grill with a small cube of cheese of choice stuffed in the pocket,  while I cooked the chicken.  The air was weighted with a silence  interspersed with a concert of bird song. Those melodies. so varied,  exist as a form of identification and communication of   birds, the vertebrata,    classification. They are the ornithologists delight and the originators of tunes long before we humans knew how to strum a guitar, or gauge our vocal chords for the purpose of producing scales and notes for perfect pitch.

Chicken with garlic, and Montreal Chicken Spice+ Grilled Cheese Pita

Ode de BBQ was an enticing cologne in this sequestered habitat as I adjusted the flame listening less for the sizzle of chicken than the wash of ripples and gentle whisper of currents in the stream just off  my right shoulder.

Once I had grilled the non-meat pitas and achieved  a slight "pinking"  of  the chicken,  it was time to move indoors.  Quick twist:  With the wrist and hand close the valve on the propane tank and flick the dials to off. It is a most interesting turn of events and saves you from empty tanks  as the propane dissipates out of the open top BBQ into the air... or worse, imagine and do the quick twist.

What's in Your Pocket: Monster Mouth,  Frills and  Hail Caesar

I have always found pockets and book shelves to be the most intriguing source for understanding any given human.  In my own pockets I have discovered that memory stick that I forgot about. I have also found coins and bills, to my delight,  as this feels deceptively like free money but is  the change from your last purchase.  Pockets are also references for groups of people, herds of animals or  smaller conglomerates, gathering  in a wider venue.  Today we will have a look at the pita pocket as all three are united into the  tasty pre- meal hunger chaser already mentioned. Pockets simply carry small handy items, can be filled or emptied, used  on your clothing or externally.  Case, envelope are close relatives or synonyms.

Historic: A library book had a pocket in the back for a card that was stamped for date due. We used to have  2 pockets  for  name cards  of  children who needed to go out of the  classroom  to the washroom. They went in pairs and did not need to wait to ask the teacher if they remained responsible in their choices. The teacher and students also knew where the child was in the event of an emergency.

The Pocket: What a simple and magnificent invention , when you think about. I am sure you know of many more uses for the pocket space.

Here are pockets with potential for carrying you into a food adventure. Enjoy. Fill er up. :)

Monster Pita Pocket
Ingredients
-12 mini Pita pockets ( whole wheat or white)  grilled on the BBQ with a square or two tbsps of grated of cheddar cheese.  Try other cheeses that go with the ingredients listed below. -Feel free-
-1/2 cup of  farm fresh corn (already out ahead of season, ahh the miracles of  innovation or smart farms beyond the use of  growth hormones)
-Medium size grilled chicken(breast, thigh or drumstick, remove skin). You can also use lean ground beef if that is easier or leave out the meat altogether for a vegetarian treat.
-Sauce Choices :  Hot Sauce  Salsa, Chili, Chutney or Mango Pickle (India)
Salsa: Use 1 tbsp per pita and I recommend  the other sauces, for chicken,  in quantities to taste. The hot sauce can be added to any one of the others or used alone.

Directions
-Place small cubes of grilled chicken in the grilled pita with cheese.
-Add sauce of choice.
-Finally add steamed corn ( 12-15 min. in boiling water) cut the cooked kernels off the cob with a sharp knife close to the cob or use canned corn ( warmed)  if you must.

Serves 4

Pretty in Green Frills
This pocket is the same as above.  The exception is that you are stuffing it with a chicken Caesar salad and you do not have to grill the pocket. If you make your own Caesar dressing, this is  even better and the grilled chicken is the same as above. Try not to rip the pitas when stuffing.  You many want to make the frill (romaine lettuce pieces) tiny if you do not like the flamboyancy of the greenery hanging out of the opening. Enjoy according to pocket style choices.

Caesar Dressing
Ingredients
1/4 cup vegetable oil
2 tbsp grated Parmesan cheese
1 tbsp white wine vinegar
2 tsp Dijon mustard
2 cloves garlic, minced
1/2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
3 tbsp mayonnaise

Mix all the ingredients together and let rest overnight or for a few hours so the flavors will meld.  Keep refrigerated until use.Donated to me  from a friend. "Yummy"  her and I agree. Enjoy.

 Hail Egg Caesar

Ingredients
-12 small pita pockets, bite size.
-3 boiled eggs, shells removed.
-Homemade Caesar dressing (above) , as opposed to mayo,  added to taste and to moisten the mashed egg mix
-Sprinkle of paprika
- Light splash of  freshly squeezed orange juice or grapefruit juice if you like  sour next to sweet of dressing. Careful not to flood the mixture. The fruit is a nice flavor addition to the creamy and it does not curdle from the acidic base unless you add too much.
- 1/4 cup of chopped green pepper or 1 celery stalk, tiny pieces.

Directions
-Mix together the egg and dressing.
-Add fresh orange juice, 12-14 drops, adjust to taste preferences and stir lightly.
-Add green peppers, tiny cubes, the size of the smallest lego blocks and stir lightly.
-Gently open the pitas, not grilled but you can heat them in the micro if you like it hot, and stuff them with the mix. Be careful to use a soft  touch so as not to rip the pockets.
-Sprinkle lightly with paprika for colour and added flavor.

Serves 4

To all of this I added some cherry tomatoes and rings of raw coloured peppers. Yummmmm
You can serve each of these recipes as one flavor on separate occasions  or mix and match depending on the number of guests, the time you have and availability of  ingredients. Find your fave and stick with it , have all three or add some of your own inventions. You can also adjust the size to serve as  large pita pockets and adjust all the quantities accordingly. This makes for a healthy, zesty  lunch. Yummmmmm.

What's in your pockets? Enjoy with family and friends.  :)

Vampires , Sex and Blood: Is it possible?

We have all read tales of Vampires. One of the characteristics of vampires is that their life force was rejuvenated if they drank the blood of young girls. Basically it was a form of sex. The male vampire had sex with a young healthy female and the mesmirsed her and dra k her blood. A very famous tale is of Count Dracula, a novel written by Bram Stoker.

Can such a weird thing be possible?   On the face, it looks absurd, but new scientific experiments do bring forth some startling facts. Older mice were given blood transfusion from youngrr mice and it was observed that older mice became healthier.  This nothing short of revolutionery. Could it be applied to humans ? Well its good to think if it, but not practical. In any case God is a great leveller and what he gives he takes something away. So just relax and look for a younger girl for sex. That IS a great rejuvenater.

P.H._D>

The dynamic quest to uncover, rediscover, avoid the need for undercover, discover are all the angles in A Story (proper noun) is  amiable, alluring and  elusive. The process for exposing any given anomaly  through fiction, imagined  imitations of aspects of reality,  or truth includes a range of details splayed across  value scales like the grays in a sketch. The Story is weighted heavily in a finer sense of pragmatism and intuition.  It is lifted floating in a wanderlust of dazzling heights, a vermillion feather on those supple wind currents of compassion and knowledge. At the end of it all, not the in apocalyptic sense,  but merely in the completion of this idea, a complicated balance,  inconvenient,  is found in the emerging conclusion. *The Hope*.

Some exposures and the creative fair consequences of these are easier to fathom then others especially when the villian or villians are obviously irretrievably that. An antagonist constructed in a flat one dimensional manner in the story line will show us this about life, as well.  To live beyond dimensions or across them is hard. Think of living beyond any given moment and into the next few > 100trillion, 2 billion, 300million 456 thousand times on a regular basis while circling the globe at light speed. WOW! Well, maybe not all that. ;)

<But>

Deeply entrenched roots, are not easily removed. The extrication is often damaging to the landscape- a hole- as erosion sets in, and other plants are damaged in the uprooting. Better if the tufts of grass, weeds, seeds, new trees, with less rooted systems, be plucked, planted, pruned, watered and maintained for everyone's enjoyment and good health.  Guided but not controlled in their growth by well appointed gardeners and natural means through wind and storms.

Simply said, preparation for the future across and beyond objects like crystal balls, obelisks, oracles and tarot cards is the essence of the present, the Y.O.L.O. of it all. Media, literature, the arts and film lend us a hand, offer a vision.

Beyond gardening tips and figurative language, we have arrived at the head stand moment in the yoga class of our discussion. The guest is now a cover, specifically and literally a book cover. Ohh I happen to have one here and I have permission to use it from the author. =Easy=

On this cover, if you choose to buy the book, there is a very interesting detail on the side of the mountain. The top most figure in the imagined evolution, in this truly well crafted, thought provoking and lol book,  and it is  a key to the next novel.   Covers, like this one,  often set the tone along with the title for the content  when carefully chosen. A Story always has a good cover.

I certainly needed my P.H._D to tell you this.   I am after all  Perfectly Human (yes, that means I have flaws) and  the  first initial  of my name   is identifying me and a minor contribution to the Alphabetical Assembly for shared use in the effort to craft communications of all kinds. :) I now afforded us the most sanguine moment for a little talk about education as a most compelling topic for our times.

On one end of the spectrum education, as an institution, has not yet made a student of the robot but possibly a master. If they attended a local University, what would be their double Major? Would they live in a dorm room with the human students or would they find a corner stand in the communal computer lounge? Robotics is definitely a rainbow for the enhancements it brings to our defenses and quality of life but there is always the threat of a storm, dare I say apocalypse, as many suggest. Just say'n. The Zombie(the viral on virus) of film, video, books  is getting a little heavy competition from the engineered real time plethora of robots. Seems like there is quite the line up for the destruction of humanity theories, past, now present and in the future.

Did you know we need never seek an education on how to play the violin, dance, write or even concern ourselves with the distinction of species as....there is a robot for that.  This phrase may replace the "there is an app for that" predecessor. We are circling the balance of educated artificial intelligence, the new frontier, in relation to human augmentation.  Reasonable progress with a 360 degree  understanding  and awareness of  ripples would be a rare gift for any human or human team.  What will be the future effects? ))))))

Trees Grow Mighty Roots

Scared, feeling apathetic or just plain ignoring it all. No, when we talk about education, enlightenment and foundations in learning, as they relate to later accomplishments we are finding the gold flakes in glass balls, the true riches. Learning always accompanies expansion in thought along with a deeper understanding of complex boundaries,  ideas but also  tolerance, compassion and culture. What is a mind without a heart, an intuition and  a finer sense of things.  The P.H.(Perfect Human)  level does not deny us this in the whirlpool of life. *The Fight*

In the end, yes, a kind of  apocalypse has occurred in the kidnapping of teen girls and the sordid corrupt and brutal  form their education has taken.  It is perfectly human to demand the right to an education and to preserve the institutions that offer global citizenship through learning. The cover on the face of things and the uncovering of the network of people responsible for this atrocity is a worthy goal. The highest edification in an educational institution comes from the PhD. *Respect*  The fact that this exists and is attainable, if we choose,  along with all the other graduated steps starting from around age 6 on  is a basic right. The freedom, for all people is partly this. Here is a  P.H._D (perfectly human demand ).   I was able to attain an education irregardless of my gender and I wish this for all.  This issue is completely and utterly of our times and once again the International community has begun the fight. Thank your for examining the Glitches along with me.

Contemporary Sparring Matches

The Folded Napkin (The early a.m. A thin coat of  ice had formed on the Lake after temps. dropped at night. This resulted in ice designs. )

Have you met Madi? Yesterday, she entered the house, not her's, or the one  where we catch a moment of repose and reflection among family or friends, beyond the sparring matches of our own lives. The rest on soft cushions intricate in their floral patterns and tonal compliments kind of places. No, Madi was going to  Parliament,  that other  house, with the flexible yet sturdy frame,   democratic seats that are  worn in places, padded in pink , brown, blue, green with a dash of purple, and strategically, lovingly  maintained for the comfort of  many.

She stepped up to the immense and polished door and knocked  to see if  anyone, the politicians, were at home. As she was admitted to this place of good governance, a giant in children's size shoes,  the conversation accompanied  her right over the threshold of debate, policy setting/ making and onto the big screen HD Tv of Kathleen Wynne and the Ontario Liberal  Minister of Health. The negotiations with Vertex for affordable pricing  of the drug Kalydeco, price tag $348, 000 a year for treatment, were taking time and she was simply asking could you hurry it up already. -Benefits to Madi's quality of life, priceless.

This 12 year old girl had a lot of pluck,  a polite manner, simple effective presentation skills, a nice outfit,   and a calm that would render some adults to shame. Her fortitude and poise was  a valuable lesson when  juxtaposed with  some of the behavior and antics seen in the Houses, ours, and others across the globe. I once witnessed  shoes being thrown across the room in a televised parliamentary debate in India. We are no better, here and we all have  stories and examples. The real story, Madi, is one you will want to know.
You can find more details and  well rounded coverage for  this issue of a  rare disease, the family's  fight, cost and balancing,  the network , the challenges on many levels  on CBC, Evening news or here Rare Diseases .

WELCOME back. Ok ,you did your homework.  Interesting wasn't it and important? OMG,  I am such a teacher. :) Let's take the discussion to the next level and centre around the idea of distribution. The pharmaceutical company, as you read, is developing and offering funding for the drugs necessary for Madi to live with  energy, strength and a measure of normalcy, that is close to perfect, given her fight. She is sparring with cystic fibrosis and winning, through the availability of this drug, but there is always the next round in the fight. Time is not on her side. As you read, the community, Dad's work insurance and the family are also in the ring, sparring with the cost of treatment. They do have help.  I think it would be easy to agree that all the Madis, Joshs, Samuels....______ (fill in the blanks, kind of thinking) deserve our best treatments and this is  irrevocably tied to a price tag, cash flow. Everything behind the production of Kalydeco, from distribution, research and yes profit margins, in a tight free market economy,  requires expense. Our value system  is, indisputably, worth a lot more than $348, 000 a year. Priceless jumps into my mind, yet again, as a simple pointed descriptive term.

As a society, a people we should demand quality of life for our children and tie this to pragmatic , creative solutions for funding. If we are to maintain a healthy, rich value system in conjunction with monetary considerations, we cannot say, "pay up or lose out"  to this family,  to Madi, to children. The systems, financial and ethical, are indisputably linked ,two kernels of our identity, within our times, our heritage and our society.

The ring for the sparring match needs to open up into spring meadows fenced in by those sustainable forests, on one side, and pot hole repaired roads, on the other.  In this resplendent field of battle exists Black- Eyed Susans, Daisies, some Purple Strife, kingly Rods of Gold,  grass varieties, the pollinators-the counter to terminators-:) rabbit and mouse holes, that will turn your ankle but are also homes in a meadow ecology.  Why do we meander here as allergy season approaches? Because nature teaches us, and writers love metaphors, analogies and hope readers do too for their   en light enment, in a busy day.

In a share economy  meadow  of   multifaceted and collective conscience, Madi need not go without. There is a great deal of wealth in the world. We need a fair and democratic idea for distribution in a free economy. Let's look at some of the new keys. 1. Crowd sourcing. 2. Sponsorship programs on many levels around the globe tied to cancer research, education for girls, and many of the big issues of our times.  3. Information: An in depth study into the start to finish process of making these life saving, life improving drugs. -The inside scoop is  ice cream, tiger tail. 4. Innovative, creative and practical business models from our leaders across cultures and all industry. We should not underestimate the brain power,  creative intelligence of business when  harnessed to good cooperate citizenship and sound, sensible investment.  Research can go beyond the medical labs.  We have begun to see this in the transition away from the cubicle philosophy to be replaced by larger centres and quiet work spaces for choice and movement depending on the job and to facilitate higher productivity or  smarter use of spaces for humans.

Madi has already entered the parliament buildings with confidence and calm and  addressed a slew of reporters. The media treated her with a respect that allowed her voice to be amplified, her feelings to be broadcast without the push and shove of the usual media scrum. I was in awe, refreshed  and thankful for this sign of respect, this measure of control, on their part.  As I sat sagging on my own cushy couch, I had the Notepad, with the metal spirals, at hand. The incessant  clicking of my pen made the music,  as I   feverishly  depressed the silver endpoint, down up, down up. The story was being told and we only needed to listen. She expressed a wish to feel well, to go on fighting, sparring with cystic fibrosis but with a meadow at her back not in the ring with boxing gloves, the clang of the bell, the fists and surging adrenalin. Her access to medicine would soon end as the cost could not be supported indefinitely. The essence of her message was poignantly felt, from my seat in my small home. This brave girl of 12 was speaking for  her right to quality of life, hers and others, in The House. What a simply beautiful, extra special, sampler of democracy.  The solution can't be far.

In fact just across the way, in another style  of sparring match, this one definitely in the ring,  there emerges a winner. Your arm is held high  and the announcement echoes out across the cyber space pulsing with excitement.  WE win, if I may be so bold as to use this plural first person pronoun. The restoration of a value system we hold dear.  One that says that equality is for all people, is championed here. The system was first  torn and then repaired through the aid of institutions: sports, courts, owners and more. I am referring to the ousting and fining of the owner of the L.A. Clippers basketball team over allegations of his less than sterling, tarnishing, in fact, racist comments.

I like to believe that there  is always an opportunity to restore the balance of things even further. Yes, I am probably a rugged optimist, at times. Soooo I have a few questions. Where does the money go? 21/2 million?  This is a drop in the basket, after a tip off the rim, for Mr. Sterling. While I have your attention, I would like to introduce the procurers of said amount  to a girl named, Madi Vanstone. Maybe, you would like to invite her to a basketball game? I am sure she loves sports? From what I have heard, just between you and me, the Clippers, The Raptors, the media,  the new franchise owners, the fans and whoever else is following this issue, she is quite a fighter, too. You would like her, as you have this connection in common, although your fights are uniquely yours.  A portion, small, could go as a sponsorship, the rest of the funds could go to other sponsorships related to your sport and also the fight against racism, in all its forms. I know this is just a solution that allows for more time for finding better solutions but more may come.

From meadows to rings the sparring matches are fought and won. The hope! Our upright value system, credited to us as the  only   bipedal +highly cognitive,+ feeling  species, could be the champion in this complex system of distribution and democracy.  Oh, there goes the bell, round 3 and Peace steps into the ring.  Yikes, quick change, let's go for coffee, this time round. I step out of the ring, for now, amidst shouts for blood, the curses and the rising  receptacle to be filled by the raw and torrid  promise of  mortal combat . There are all kinds of fights.
