Outlets Profit More Than the Average Customer is Led to Believe

The price tags found in outlet stores make it difficult for customers to believe the business could possibly be making money. The truth of the matter is that they really are making a profit. Of course, they have to make or they wouldn't be in business. However, the real shocker is how great the cuts are in order to make profits possible.

How can the items afford to be less than the cost it is being sold for?

The majority of the store's stock is not the same as the retail stock. They can differentiate in material, details and production quality. Usually the outlets' stock is made up of items made only for the outlets whether or not they openly state it. This can mislead the customer in believing the crazy price tags.

Why are they located so far out from the cities?

It was done so they were able to cut costs and prevent loss in sales at the main retail chains due to the outlets. They later found customers willingly spent more than they usually would due to the effort of traveling a great distant for a good sale.

Are We Born Knowing The Difference Between Right And Wrong?

I know that I tried instilling in my children the difference between right and wrong and what they did away from home was entirely up to them. But do we have some kind of instinct when we're first born of knowing the difference between right and wrong or is it a "learned" behavior? Apparently there have been studies on this and apparently babies can tell the difference between good and bad,so we are born with a "moral" core. To read about the study go to this link wreg.com/2014/02/15/are-we-born-with-a-moral-ore-the-baby-lab-says-yes/
Apparently without being taught colors a baby can still distinguish between good and bad. Even though these babies can't talk, they can still distinguish between good and bad.

Why You Should Write Evergreen Articles

Article writing is a great way to make money online and a lot of people make a full time living either by writing articles for clients or for their own websites or both. If you have been doing article writing for some time now you might have heard of the importance of writing evergreen articles. People who are serious about earning income for a long period of time from their articles need to concentrate on evergreen topics. When you write an article always ask yourself a question whether it can give you earnings even after a few years from now. Articles which have good income potential in the long run are the ones which can make you successful as an article writer.

Evergreen articles will continue to bring in views and hits for a long time because the interest in those topics is always there. The information contained in evergreen articles  is useful to the reader over a long period of time and does not become outdated after a few days, months or even years. The content of these articles is relevant and useful for readers no matter when they read them.

You should write articles on evergreen topics as this will ensure they get readership which makes your effort and time worth more. Writing on topics which are hot now is perfectly fine but you should also concentrate on writing on evergreen topics to be rewarded with visitors again and again for months and even years.

PWG Discussion: Journal Posts & Discussions vs. Articles

In visiting some of the other posts on PWG, I see quite a few that are journal posts: chatty, about me, what-I-did-today, what-I-am thinking kinds of posts, what my pet did, what my toaster did, how much PWG has changed since I last visited, etc. It looks like those posts are fine here, so this is not a complaint, but there is a difference between a journal post and an article, and if we are attracting readers by promoting our news, journalism, creative writing or other articles, they may quickly lose interest in Preferred Writers Group if the next post that they read is just journal-type chatter.

However, what if we prefaced any chatty posts with the word "Journal?" Like "Journal: What I Did Today," "Journal: My Thoughts" "Journal: What My Toaster Did" etc.? That way a visitor would know they were heading to a journal-type entry when they clicked on a post marked "Journal."

I would like to suggest the same for PWG Discussion posts--again, visitors are not going to be interested in our discussion posts. We, on the other hand, do want to read other people's thoughts, ideas and suggestions about this group. Maybe we could earmark our discussions to make it easy for our writers to find them, and easy for our visitors to avoid them. For instance, I used "PWG Discussion" on this post. We can also use the labels/tags "journal" and "discussion" to help earmark them.

We all want page views, but we absolutely WILL LOSE READERS if they come to read articles and hit upon group discussions and idle chatter or daily accounting posts from the other site some of you guys post about so much. If we just post for each other to read, that is a maximum 70-ish readers now--hardly enough to earn any income. We need to be attracting outside readers who will enjoy reading several articles while they are here.

Honestly, I don't want to promote my articles to my professional circles and then have them stumble on something stream-of-conscience here unless they know ahead of time they are about to read someone's journal entry. I know we are supposed to be "good connectors," but there are some posts I am just not going to share or feel obligated to comment on if they don't have a point worth passing along.

Maybe I am the only one who feels that way, which is fine. I am just testing the waters here anyway, and this may not be a good fit, but I thought I would toss my ideas out there and see what the rest of you think and at least give you something to chew on.

Scourge of Scoundrels #1: Ching Shih, She Was the World’s Greatest Pirate

What makes a pirate great? A chest full of gold, a fleet of ships, and a brutal and bloodthirsty crew are a good start. The pirate Ching Shih, or the Widow Ching, had more gold, more power, more ships, and tougher crews than any other pirate ever. She was also one of the very few pirates in the history of the world to retire and die of age related complications.

She makes Blackbeard and Captain Kidd look like little boys trying to play pirate.

What She Did:

The Widow Ching commanded an armada of between 400 and 1200 ships with between 50,000 to 70,000 pirates under her command at any one time.

She was the most powerful naval force in the South China Sea. She defeated the Qing dynasty’s handpicked naval armada, sinking or capturing 63 of their ships, and allowing only enough survivors to ensure word got back to the Emperor about how horrible the battle had been.

Her Red Flag Fleet blockaded the Portuguese city of Macao, and took everything of value out. The Portuguese dispatched a fleet to deal with the pirates. The Portuguese fleet was crushed.

She also soundly defeated a British fleet created for the sole purpose of destroying her.

After their defeats, the British and Portuguese declined to go directly after Widow Ching’s pirate empire.

Her power was so great that some costal towns paid their taxes to her instead of the government.

She did anything she wanted in the South China Sea and its costal towns and villages.

How She Did It:

The Widow Ching was ruthless and cunning. She introduced accounting standards into the pirate fleet. Everything was recorded and put into the treasury. Every pirate got their share based upon rank and time of service. Her accounting was clean and transparent.

She also had a strict pirate code for her fleet. If anyone stole from the treasury, or tried to keep some treasure for himself without the proper paperwork, he was beheaded. If a pirate was insubordinate and failed to follow a direct order, he was beheaded. If anyone tried to freelance and issue their own orders he was beheaded.

If a pirate deserted his ship or took any unauthorized leave, he was hunted down and had their ears cut off. Then he was paraded around the ship in front of the crew so everyone could see what a coward he was.

Ching Shih had special rules about captives. Anyone raping a captive would be killed. Beautiful captives could be taken as wives or concubines, but any infidelity was punished by death. If any sexual relations were had while a pirate was on duty, the pirate would be beheaded, and if the relationship were consensual, the women would be chained with cannonballs and tossed into the sea.

Ugly captives were released back to shore.

In battle, male captives could choose to follow the pirate code and join the crew or be killed on the spot.

Back Story:

Ching Shih first enters the written record in 1801 when the dreaded pirate Ching Yi captured her. He was so smitten by his captured prostitute that he made her his wife. But Ching Shih was not just a pretty face, and was not content with staying indoors all day, awaiting her man. She quickly became a partner in her husband’s piracy. By 1804 her husband’s fleet, known as the Red Flag Fleet, was the most powerful pirate fleet in the area.. The Chings also took rival pirate fleets and formed a confederation, further consolidating their power.

In 1807 Ching Yi had the misfortune to be on the wrong side of a typhoon and was killed in present day Vietnam. The Widow Ching worked quickly to consolidate her power.

She personally contacted the most powerful pirate captains in the confederation and secured their loyalty. She also quickly entered into a romantic relationship with her husband’s former second in command, his adopted son, Chang Pao. The two were fiercely loyal to each other. He helped institute his wife’s code and accounting regulations.

How Did It End:

The Chinese empire couldn’t get anyone to hunt Ching Shih down, and so they offered her, and most of her pirates, amnesty. Ching Shih took the offer, opened up a casino and brothel and lived peacefully until she died at age 69. She even got to keep her spoils.

Poetry for St. Patrick's Day--a Shamrock of Three Poems

Photo © Kathryn Darden
Leprechauns, kelly green, shamrocks, pots of gold... In honor of the patron saint of Ireland, St. Patrick, whose day we celebrate every March 17, here is my shamrock of three wee poems about Ireland and Saint Patrick which I wrote for St. Patrick's Day.

Ireland Acrostic: A Poem About the Emerald Isle

I reland always beckoning:
R ainbows and pots of gold;
E merald Isle ever glistening in Celtic tales of old;
L eprechauns, lurking, listening;
A ncient Druids by Saints redeemed.
N omad offspring seek those green shores,
D rawn to Eire like ancient reckoning.

Saint Patrick the Shepherd - a Poem for Children for St. Patrick's Day

St. Patrick as a young man
Was captured and carried away.
He became a slave in Ireland,
Where he's loved until this day
Patrick tended his sheep flock,
Where he heard the voice of God,
And he became a shepherd,
To those born on Irish sod.
He used the Irish shamrock
To teach the trinity.
He showed the Celtic Church
The path to Eternity.
So wear your green with honor
And remember this great man --
A saint who learned as a captive
To seek God and follow his plan.

St. Patrick Acrostic - a Poem for Saint Patrick's Day

S ent to Ireland by God,
T aken there by force.
P atrick tended his flock
A nd listened to the Lord.
T ime ended his bondage
R eturning as a free man.
I nspiring with stories and service,
C eltic Christians honored him,
K eeping his memory forever green.

Valentine's Day Poetry - Poems for Valentines

Although Valentine's Day may be over for this year, being in love is never out of style! Here is a trio of original poems I have written in honor of Valentine's Day, and also in honor of love, whatever the season or time of year.

Clip art I purchased rights to use.

The Essence of Valentines - A Poem for Recalcitrant Men!

A poem for men who think Valentine's Day is a waste of your time and money to encourage you to give a little love and attention to your Valentine!

Hearts and romance and flowering vines
Cupids and candy saying, "Be mine."
Romantic gestures, sentiments sublime -
All part of the essence of Valentines.
Some men consider the day a waste,
Lacking in merit and void of taste,
But what's wrong with taking a lady to dine
And wishing a woman happy Valentines?
Our world is chaotic, and full of stress,
A romantic day shouldn't come with duress,
But happy is the man who finds the time
To show some attention to his Valentine.
You do not need jewelry, or flowers, or sweets
To give a lady the romance she needs -
Some thoughtful and tender attention is fine,
And should make the day a happy Valentines.
The essence of Valentines comes from the heart,
But a day for romance is a good place to start,
So make some sweet gestures; it's your turn to shine,
Treat your wife or girlfriend like she's your Valentine!

Valentine Acrostic - a Love Poem

An acrostic love poem

V elvety romantic nights,
A dmiring the glowing moon,
L ambent in the darkened sky.
E ntranced by this lovely sight,
N estled, we exist in tune,
T wo hearts, when apart, still nigh,
I n this most enchanted time
N eeding only your sweet sigh -
E ach breath of my Valentine

Carmine - A Love Poem

A Haiku for Valentine's Day

A heart of carmine,
The image of Valentines,
Let me give you mine...

How to Make Beautiful Coffee Cup Art!

Great Gifts come in varieties!

This 'How-To' will go over just what you need to make a great personalized coffee cup for someone!
There are multiple methods, but I have found the two specific methods that I think work best.
  • You can use either Porcelain or Ceramic cups.
  • Recycled cups work the best.
  • Each type of cup works best with specific markers.

What you will need

You will need:
  • Ceramic or Porcelain Cup
  • Sharpie Markers and/or Sharpie Paint Pens (for Ceramic cup)
  • Porcelain Pens (for Porcelain cup)
  • Desired Design
  • Tracing paper (optional)
  • Graphite Paper (optional)
  • Any type of tape (optional)
  • Scissors (optional)
  • Oven
****The optional supplies are for people who would prefer to trace their design onto the cup instead of drawing it free hand. I often trace the design myself.****

Why use a Ceramic Cup?

Why are there different options you might ask? Why does it matter what kind of cup to use?
Well, simply put they react differently with different markers. Ceramic cups are more porous than Porcelain. Also, ceramic cups might be easier to find already in your house or at a good will for cheap.
Sharpie markers work best with ceramic and likely you already have these in your home somewhere. That is why this is such a cool gift idea or fun craft! You can actually do this with any dish (plate, bowl, etc.) as long as it is ceramic and you use sharpie markers.
I also suggest using recycled cups, because they will have less of a finish on them, thus making it easier for the markers to seal. Also, it's good for the environment!
I think it is best to use a white cup so you can draw with multiple colors, but if you can only find colored ones that will work with black and white markers just fine. You can see in the picture that I chose a mustard colored cup here. I thought the design would go really well with a cup that color.

What is the difference with Porcelain?

Well, Sharpie pens just don't show up as well with Porcelain cups. They typically have a better finish on it that is more difficult to seal to.
If you must use Porcelain you will need to get Porcelain Markers to go with it. They are more expensive and you can't always find them at Michael's Arts and Crafts. It would be easier to buy them from places like Amazon or eBay.
If you do use sharpie markers they won't be as brilliant once you have sealed them. As you see on the Pikachu themed cup. I used sharpie marker with a Porcelain cup and it looked amazing before I heat sealed it. Sadly the colors faded. This was my first attempt though and it did still sell on Etsy recently!

The How-To Part!

Okay now that you have all of your supplies and have made a decision on what type of materials you want here is the actual How-To part!
  1. Gather your materials.
  2. Wash and dry your cup (better mark you with my dear cup)
  3. If you can free hand, go ahead and free hand your design with your chosen pens.
  4. Not good at freehanding? me either.
  • Go ahead and trace the design you want on tracing paper.
  • Take the Graphite paper and tape it together onto the cup with the traced design. The order is Graphite paper, tracing paper.
  • Take a pencil and trace around the design firmly.
  • Remove the papers carefully.
  • Now you can draw over the line with your markers!
5. Are you all done drawing? Now comes the hard part. You have to wait for an entire 24 hours to make sure the ink sets. Ugh, I know, I hate waiting too.
6. Take your cup and put it into the oven. Pre-Heat the oven to 400 degrees. Some people suggest 350 degrees, but I have found that 400 seals better and it lasts longer. Once the oven has pre-heated, set the timer for 30 minutes.
PROTIP: Make sure to let your cup warm up in the oven as it Pre-heats and let it stay in the oven to cool down to avoid it cracking!

Extra Advice

  • The sharpie paint markers are amazing to work with. They cover over lines better and don't erase as much as it writes over itself. The Sharpie markers work fine, but sometimes they erase themselves much like dry erase markers.
  • These are supposed to be dishwasher and Microwave safe. However, I suggest only washing them by hand and NEVER scrub at the design.
  • If you get a design randomly from the internet, remember that the design might belong to someone else and you cannot sell the item. If you want to avoid that problem, I suggest using images for inspiration to create your own unique design. The general rule among artists is at least 30% different from the original to count as your own.
  • DON'T FORGET TO HAVE FUN!

Converting Analog Television to Digital TV Still Not Working For Millions of Americans

75_604799.jpg
I'm one of the millions of Americans who are without television as the converter boxes don't work on my old TV set. I havewasted hours and days of my life since February2009  trying to make the digital converter box work and nothing works. You can read the full article at "Converting Analog Televisions to Digital TV Not as Easy as Promised"

After going through the same frustrations, many Americans have been forced to buy new digital TVs. I bought mine at Walmart for $168. A friend did the same and she had to return her TV, because even with the new TV, she still can't pull in a regular, reliable signal -- $200 wasted on a new TV that won't pull in a digital signal. I still have my digital television, but it doesn't work 50% of the time, and when it does work, I get one channel. I used to get FOUR channels on my old TV before the government stepped in.

Magnavox DTV Digital to Analog Converter Box # TB1110MW9 and Other Converter Boxes Do Not Work on My Television

I don't watch a lot of television, but I do depend on my TV during tornadoes or other crisis, so I have tried and tried to make this work. If I hold the converter box just right, occasionally I can pull in a pixilated black and white picture with no sound but a hiss. The picture lasts a few seconds before it disintegrates and then it is gone. Usually I cannot pull it in again for several hours or several days.  The FCC and their partners in crime -- Congress -- have really shafted those of us in the lower income brackets and put us in harm's way because we can't get the weather maps or other alerts provided by local television stations.

The early commercials on both TV and web promised an easy conversion using the box, so we all just let this happen. After all, if the government tells us it's going to be easy, well, enough said, right??? Many of you won't care, because you have satellite or cable or budgets that will allow you to purchase new TVs and outdoor antennas -- luxuries the unemployed cannot afford. But this should served as a wakeup call as to how the U.S. government can make a decision, promise citizens it will be easy, and then leave a great deal of its people in much worse state than they were before.

Five years later and I still can't watch TV. I could BUY an expensive roof antenna and hope it pulls in a better signal, or BUY a cable or satellite provider, but I didn't have to do this before. Thanks, US Government and FCC for driving the monthly costs up for millions of Americans...again...

Life changing options to prevent childhood obesity.

Contrary to popular believe childhood obesity is not attributed or caused by genetics, childhood obesity is a lifestyle disease, which means that in order to prevent or eliminate childhood obesity parents must make a life changing decision in order to benefit the health of their children. Here is what to consider:

1. Take control of your grocery shopping.
2. Buy healthier food and snacks for the consumption of your family
3. Limit the number of times your family, mainly your children snack between meals. Studies suggest that just one snack between meals is more than enough.
4. Be a role model for the children and have the entire family do the same. In other words, everyone should eat healthy foods.
5. Decrease the number of hours per day your child spends in front of a TV, computer, or video game screen.
6. Increase physical activity and play time outside.
7. Ensure the children have a good night sleep.
8. Make sure to explain to the children why they need to take on a healthier life style and why it will be good for them. Explain to them as well the many risks of obesity and how it can affect not just their childhood, but their entire life.
By taking in to consideration this simple life changing actions parents can prevent their children from becoming obese children and suffering from childhood obesity, which is turning to be an epidemic.
